Dear Classmate:
This year represents 30 years since we all graduated from BHS and normally would be a reunion year for us. Several classmates have contacted committee members asking for a status of our reunion plans.
As most of you are aware, Kevin Quinn who headed up our reunion committee passed away unexpectedly a couple of years ago. Kevin’s passing was difficult for us all as he was a great friend and organizing the reunions was something that was very important to him. Since that time the committee has been working with Kevin’s family to try to locate our class funds. Unfortunately, to date, we have not been able to identify these funds. It seems Kevin did not keep a separate bank account for just the class and therefore it is difficult to distinguish his personal funds from any class related money.
As this has now happened twice to our class in recent years, we applied for a Federal ID number for our class and a bank account was opened in that name of BHS Class of 1984 Reunion with multiple signatories so this WILL NOT happen again. In the meantime however, it brings us currently to a reunion year and upcoming scholarships without any funding. We use class funds to keep the individual ticket costs down for each reunion as well as the $500 yearly scholarship to a graduating BHS senior in need. Since Kevin’s passing, members of the committee have used personal funds for both scholarships and administrative costs of our class. We are at the point however, that we can no longer afford to do this.
What we have decided to do is plan a fundraiser for this year. The fundraiser would be to replenish our class fund to help defer costs of our future events (reunion) and also pay for the yearly scholarships. The scholarships are something the committee is very committed to continuing and we know that it was something that Kevin was very proud of and would want us to continue with as well. Going forward we are renaming this scholarship: The Kevin Quinn Memorial Scholarship.
The fundraiser, which we would like to have sometime in October of this year, would be a “mini-reunion” where classmates, friends and family can attend and have a great time while raising money for our class. The most important thing we need is YOU! We need volunteers and people to help with the following:
- VENUE – we would like to find a place in the Brockton area (or surrounding towns) at little or no cost to the class
ENTERTAINMENT (DJ OR BAND) at little or no cost
-
RAFFLE ITEMS – Donations of raffle items (either personal or business related) as well as help getting local businesses to either make direct donations or provide raffle items.
-
FOOD – Volunteers to make food for the event
Highlights of the event
****Any other suggestions are welcome!
By having the fundraiser event – hopefully we could get a lot of us together during our actual reunion year for a good time while also funding a real reunion next year – which we will call “30 + 1”
If you are able to help with the event or have suggestions, please let us know!
Once we secure a venue and date, we will send out a message to the class.
To those that cannot attend the fundraiser event, we will also be able to accept direct donations via mail – we will send out information on that as well.
We welcome your feedback and your help in pulling together this event. Please email us at the email address below if you are able to help, have any suggestions or have any questions.
In closing, please understand that we have worked very closely and diligently with Kevin Quinn’s family to locate our class funds. We thank them for all of their help during what has certainly been a very difficult time for them. The good that has come out of this – we now have a class fund that is properly setup and we will be able to continue with the Kevin Quinn Memorial Scholarship which I know makes all of us very proud.
Thank you!
