1984 in sports

Sandie told me she is unable to modify the 1984 history page on this site, and since the people who run the British company that generated the page are probably not American sports fans, I thought I'd supplement the page here with a rundown of what happened in American sports in 1984:

AP Athletes of the Year: Olympians Carl Lewis (track & field) and Mary Lou Retton (women's gymnastics)

Super Bowl XVIII: LA Raiders defeated Washington Redskins 38-9

World Series: Detroit Tigers won in 5 games over San Diego Padres

NCAA Basketball: Georgetown defeated Houston 84-75 for national title

NCAA Football:  Brigham Young University (BYU) voted national champion; Boston College's Doug Flutie executed "Miracle in Miami" and won Heisman Trophy that fall (had to get that in as a Boston sports fan)

NBA Finals: Boston Celtics won in 7 games over LA Lakers (I'm sure we all remember that )

Stanley Cup (NHL): Edmonton Oilers won in 5 games over New York Islanders

Fight of the year: Thomas "Hit Man" Hearns KO'ed Roberto Duran in 2nd round in middleweight division

PGA Tour money leader: Tom Watson

Horse racing: Swale won Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes, then died; Inaugural Breeders' Cup run @ Hollywood Park (Wild Again won Classic)

Auto racing: Cale Yarborough won Daytona 500; Rick Mears won Indy 500

Tennis: John McEnroe, Martina Navratilova both won Wimbledon and US Open

This last one may be a bit self-serving...

PBA Player of the Year:  Mark Roth (whom I've met recently )
